Here's an explanation of some of the abbreviations used to describe some of the districts:
- CSD

- Community School District. This can span over several cities or be limited to the one community it is named for.
- CUSD
- Community Unit School District. This type of district has elementary, junior high, and high school buildings in its jurisdiction.
- ESD
- Elementary School District. This district has only elementary schools, and students will go to another district assigned to their residence for middle school or junior high as well as high school.
- GSD
- Grade School District. This district goes kindergarten through eighth grade (K-8) only, students go to a second district for high school.
- HSD
- High School District. This type of district, as it would appear, contains only high schools.
- USD
- Unit School District. This type of district offers education from kindergarten and sometimes pre-school up until senior year of high school.
